Based on Victor Hugo's play, Le roi s'amuse and often hailed as Verdi's first masterpiece, Rigoletto has been a cornerstone of operatic repertory since its first controversial performance in 1851. This richly layered tale centers around a malicious court jester who gets a taste of his own medicine as he tries to protect his beautiful daughter from the amorous escapades of the Duke he serves.
This was a traditional production of classical Rigoletto, with richly colorful costumes and sets and an outstanding cast.
